SAT I (Reasoning)

The SAT I (Reasoning) examination is an assessment of English and Mathematics. In its most simplistic form the examination can be described as having three component parts:

  • Critical Reading
  • Mathematics
  • Writing

College Board gives brief information about the SAT I (Reasoning) examination stating that it contains

  • The critical reading section emphasizes reading and assesses students’ ability to draw inferences, synthesize information, distinguish between main and supporting ideas, and understand vocabulary as it is used in context.
  • The mathematics section requires students to apply mathematical concepts and to use data literacy skills in interpreting tables, charts, and graphs.
  • The writing section includes both multiple-choice questions that deal with the mechanics of writing and an essay as a direct measure of writing skills.

Each of these three sections is allocated a score out of 800. The maximum score for each section is 800 and the minimum 200 (to account for the fact that multiple choice questions and that guesswork could be involved in answering questions). The perfect SAT I score is 2400, and is extremely difficult to achieve. It should be noted that when a student answers a reading / writing multiple choice question incorrectly marks are deducted.
